Supernature – Friday Fictioneers

Here is this week’s entry into the weekly challenge brought to us by the lovely Rochelle Wisoff-Fields.

Here are the rules: Use the photo as inspiration, write a hundred(ish) words – and share! Here goes my offering for this week – and I welcome your comments again!

They call it The Bell of Hope.

These days, there is nobody left in the remote village who was alive when the disaster happened. However, everyone from the tiniest child to the oldest matriarch seems to remember it, as if it was only yesterday.

Eyes widen, faces animate, hands gesticulate. The collective memory is like a fever – hot, rapid, infectious.

We outsiders are inclined to disbelief – until The Bell of Hope peals ferociously of its own volition each 21^st February at 2.13pm. The exact time at which the sleeping volcano erupted and engulfed the houses clinging to its slopes.

Return me to a gentle land
Gather me in, take my hand
Restore my mind to calmer days
Remove the scene that still replays
over and over, jamming my head
Bring me serenity, a constant thread
of restoration, courage anew
Let me forge ahead, source my strength from you
Know that with each breath and every pace
I take you with me, see your face
Hear your laughter, envisage your smile
Yes, we are parted, but just for a while
Life is but a moment, a wrinkle, a sigh
This is only adieu, Dad, not forever goodbye.

Because time passes, pain eases, gratitude settles in and new dawns are always possible. Amazingly, I wrote this poem before reading Grace’s introduction at Open Link Night – and yet it just seems to fit. I have so much for which to be grateful.
