SoCS Dec 21/19 – Dorian Gray’s Cupboard

This time of year is full of pressure to mingle, to socialise, to network (if you’re in business), to buy, buy and spend, spend.

I’m not anti-social (yes, yes you are, Freya). I like (some) people. I love my partner. I love my family. I also love hunkering down, curling up under a blanket with a steaming cup of coffee or tea, a book, or a good film or my laptop so I can peck away at the keyboard on my work in progress novel. I like to put distance between me and The Outside.

Partly it’s how I’ve been for as long as I can remember. I was an only child until I was almost 13 – I was pretty self-reliant (and writing stories) even then. In fact, I’m almost certain my mum still has some of these stories filed away in the Sideboard of Doom. You know how Dorian Gray had his aging picture in the attic? I’m pretty sure that my mum’s excellent memory for All The Things Her Children Did When They Were Little is because she has filed pieces of our lives in that darned cupboard!

It’s time for Stream of Consciousness Saturday where the lovely Lynn invites us to write using a word that includes ‘ingle’ – I just added an M!

Please do join us to read, or let your mind wander and join in!

dVerse Meet the Bar – What lies beneath?

There is no telling what you will see
Lying in wait under the tree
Distracted by baubles, I have no mind
Of the type of present you will find
Here’s to hoping it will be
Something apt for you, from me!

Slightly late to the party here, it’s time for Meet the Bar over on dVerse – the host in the lively and noisy pub (cos you know, poets reciting in all the corners!) is the lovely Björn.

He introduces us to a delightful Swedish custom of adding a simple rhyme verse to Christmas presents, which they open on Christmas Eve. He invites us to share our present poems with the rest of the bar.

Mine is, as ever, a little sideways, but also apt. My memory lets me down on occasion – doesn’t yours?

Please head on over to the dVerse poets pub – settle in, read, maybe join in? You’re always welcome!

Do you have the answer? – dVerse MTB

If there were time left to us

I would rip the stitches free that cleaved my lips tight shut.

For whilst you still walked this good earth

fear stole the voice from the questions that rose unbidden

and I smiled, or cried, and wondered. In silence.

Now, I hold your thoughts on pages –

thoughts hidden in a briefcase

for more than half my life.

I touch the places where you once were,

skin to paper to skin, separated by life – and death.

I imagine you frowning as you wrote

at a rickety table in a steamed up coffee shop

on a gloomy December day

like this one.

Would you have answered my questions?

Would I have asked them anyway?

Honestly?

Do you know?

——–

This week were are asked to write a poetic apostrophe – something I had never heard about until now. Do you know? Whether you do or not, please do join us at dVerse, read and join in if you feel inclined!
