Technicolour – dVerse Open Link Night

IMG_2940

The skeletal beginnings and the nagging thought that maybe I can’t do it this time are soon engulfed in colour. I resist the temptation to fill the void with only one – scarlet in this case. No, I look closely and discern the many hues, the tones, the textures, the dark, the light. I dissect. I delight in the clatter as I discard one pencil for another. I revel in the aroma of graphite, pigment and wax. I rejoice in the rasp of wood on blade as I sharpen yet another to a pin-fine point.

I lose myself. I lose myself in the not-quite-smooth paper brushing against my hand. Cold pressed, hot pressed, Daler Rowney, Strathmore, Arches, Winsor & Newton – a magical mantra that is music to my ears. I lose myself in the creation of something where nothing once reigned.

I infuse paper
with the joy of rainbows – no
concerns can stop me

Tonight it’s the turn of the delectable and highly talented Bjorn to host the bar over at dVerse. I know that it’s usually Monday when we are invited to write a haibun, but I thought I’d mix it up a bit and share one with you this evening instead.

My other creative passion, relatively recently reignited, is art. Much like when I’m writing, I lose myself in the process, but in a very different way. I hope I’ve managed to impart that in my haibun!

Open Link Night is great fun, as are all the nights when the dVerse team open the doors and usher us in through the hallowed portals. Do come along, even if it’s just to read an enjoy. Or… why not take part yourself? I guarantee a warm welcome!

All That Glisters – Prompt Nights: A Dash of Sunny

IMG_2526

“A

rose by

any other name!”

She looks sweetly at

him, the centre of her

world, or so he thinks, oblivious

to her machinations. Machiavelli would have paled

in her shadow. She allows him a kiss,

pressing his finger to the rose’s thorn. The pain

sears his finger, but doesn’t reach his heart. Not yet.

I feel like I’m flitting from one prompt to another at the moment, a little like a butterfly. Maybe I’ll settle for a particular selection, maybe I won’t. It’s not a bad thing to investigate what’s out there, is it?

Anyway, this is another prompt I settled up, courtesy of Michael. His poem ‘The Black Rose’ is full of beautiful memories, but he has the black rose to link him to his past, so it’s not a mournful poem by any stretch of the imagination.

I took a different turn to the prompt, which you can find at A Dash of Sunny, and is focused on roses this month. It’s not that I’m not romantic, but it’s not my natural writing bent, if you will. So… love can be what we want to see it as, rather than what it is. Such is human nature. I hope my male lover learns the truth before the pain of discovery becomes unbearable! And in case you were wondering, the poetry form is an Etheree.

Why not pop on over to A Dash of Sunny, take part in the prompt, or just read the other entries?

TJ’s Household Haiku Challenge – Iron

Her forehead wrinkles,

straining with effort. This form

of wit defeats her.

Oh contrary one!

Speak plainly, I beg of you.

Sarcasm irks me.

Ooh, it’s fair to say I’ve been looking forward to TJ’s Household Haiku Challenge since I took part last week. It was a fun prompt! Thank you to TJ for the warm welcome 🙂

I decided to go down the ‘irony’ route, as I hope you can tell (not written with a trace of irony, no, not at all!). If I’d chosen ironing, well, I would have been forced to reveal that me and the iron aren’t close acquaintances at all. Not that I walk around looking like a rag-bag, but I choose my clothes somewhat based on their need for ironing…

Anyway, I hope you enjoy my two little offerings! Why not pop on over to TJ’s place to read the other offerings? Or… take part yourself!
