Of course, they thought of it as a cruel and unusual punishment, something in which they had delighted since 1933.

Hire a Jewish architect to draw up the plans, engage a firm of Jewish builders, take on Jewish craftsmen. Everyone knew the purpose behind the building – it was the Nazi regime’s pride and joy.

The HQ of the Third Reich’s railway system was a grand affair. The hub of their efficient cargo transportation across the continent of Europe, Poland a special destination.

The workers were just grey, miserable, expendable creatures. The grill pattern in the stairwell, their final, finishing touch…

“I can see you just fine, sweetheart.”

“I know. But wishing won’t change anything. It will just make you miserable. I want you to be happy.”
“We all miss you, Dad.”
“You don’t need to miss me. I am always here. Right here, where it matters.”

A gentle warmth enveloped me, even though the air was chill this morning.
Yes. My Dad is always here.

“I’ll give her bloomin’ comfortable, stuck up little -“

“Now then, Silas, give ‘Er Ladyship a fair chance… she’s not used to the countryside, brought up in a town she was, and well you know it!”

“Alright, Lizzy m’love, stop yer grumblin’. She’ll need to knock those airs on the ‘ead though. ‘Is Lordship won’t have it.”

Silas watched as his broad-beamed wife trundled off to feed the hens, bless her heart. The new lady of the manor wasn’t a patch on her.

Urging his mares to walk on, he delivered yet another load of straw for Lady Rainsford’s mattresses. She’d learn the ways of the countryside alright, once the red ants started biting…
