Cicatrix – Sunday Mini Challenge – Real Toads

DSC_0002

The image of you has softened over time
I see you, prostrate, as if through film star soft-focus
Still, at last, still, forever
and yet if I push myself through that ghost-laden portal
I know that you have taken on a different form
you are transformed into no more than

Ash

Dispersed on the winds
I breathe you in
You become part of me in more than the accepted ways, Dad
Your death doesn’t hurt in the way it once did
No longer lacerates, no longer eviscerates

Stigmata

But I am left behind
But I am in sorrow for the missed opportunities
But I am swallowed by regret that I
can never have that conversation
Never explain that I understand you better

Never confess that I judged you too harshly

Never reveal that there is so much more of you in me

than I ever cared to admit or wanted then

Never tell you that I welcome that

Now

But, at least, the knife-edge cicatrix
of the loss of you has faded
I can smile at the thought of you
because I think of you

Often

This was inspired by the prompt found over at Imaginary Garden with Real Toads, where we are encouraged to write about something that is both harrowing, and hallowed. A challenging prompt, for sure, but it helps to write about these things, to transfer the ever-whirling thoughts to print, at least for a while.

Why not pop on over to the Real Toads blog, and take a look, take part?

Juicy

In my turquoise mind I am
splashing rainbows of colour
where my heart bleeds
its emotions on hungry canvas

In my sun-yellow heart I am
creator of rampant new worlds
monster flowers raining
petals on miniature microcosms

In my body scarlet energy flows
vibrating and aching
with endless possibilities
for fresh new beginnings

On my purple horizon
nothing is planned
everything is radiant
life is succulent

This week, Grace, our host at dVerse Poetics is throwing colour our way, to chime perfectly with the arrival of spring – hallelujah! She introduces us to the fabulous art of Sunita Khedekar and is inviting us to write a poem inspired by one of her works.

I hope you enjoy my offering – and please do join us! The hosts all work extremely hard to make the community a success.

The Message – dVerse Poetics

This week’s dVerse Poetics is asking us to write about Alice in Wonderland and advent – I love a challenge!

I hope you enjoy my offering – written on the fly and with the wonderful line drawings of my dog-eared copies of Alice in Wonderland and A Christmas Carol floating around in my head.

Please visit dVerse to read the other thoughts of my fellow poets!

– The Message –

The heartless Queen rules o’er all the land
Alice stops her with just one hand
and a little help from her madcap friends
Turning tyranny to sweeter ends

The appeal of miracles and festive joy
Once a lump of coal and a handmade toy
Old-fashioned ideals lost in desire
for the next big thing to which many aspire

A cozy home and a family together
Are all we need in this inclement weather
Big presents, grand gestures are oh so passé
Shelter and love are the needs for today

So let’s be like Alice, stand up to the foe
of rampant consumerism – let it all go
The still, small voice will change society’s tack
And turn our attention to the real things we lack
