The Message – dVerse Poetics

This week’s dVerse Poetics is asking us to write about Alice in Wonderland and advent – I love a challenge!

I hope you enjoy my offering – written on the fly and with the wonderful line drawings of my dog-eared copies of Alice in Wonderland and A Christmas Carol floating around in my head.

Please visit dVerse to read the other thoughts of my fellow poets!

– The Message –

The heartless Queen rules o’er all the land
Alice stops her with just one hand
and a little help from her madcap friends
Turning tyranny to sweeter ends

The appeal of miracles and festive joy
Once a lump of coal and a handmade toy
Old-fashioned ideals lost in desire
for the next big thing to which many aspire

A cozy home and a family together
Are all we need in this inclement weather
Big presents, grand gestures are oh so passé
Shelter and love are the needs for today

So let’s be like Alice, stand up to the foe
of rampant consumerism – let it all go
The still, small voice will change society’s tack
And turn our attention to the real things we lack

The Light Fantastic – Five Sentence Fiction

It’s time for my latest offering to Lillie McFerrin’s Five Sentence Fiction, a weekly prompt where there is no word limit, just a limit on the number of sentences. Plus, although she provides a word prompt, it is just for direction only – you don’t have to include the word itself in your contribution.

This week, the prompt is  – DANCING.

Do let me know what you think of my offering below – and whilst you’re at it, why not take a look at everyone else’s offerings (I’m sure they’ll be fabulous), and even give it a go yourself…

– The Light Fantastic –

Maeve hummed to herself as Georgie guided her round, completing the reverse turn and feather finish to perfection, their signature move.

The music played on, the lights shone, her dress sparkling and glinting as it swayed around her calves – soft kisses against her skin.

Finally it came to an end, and she prepared her stage smile to acknowledge the applause from enchanted audience.

“We’re just too avant-garde for them, sweetheart,” whispered Georgie, as they marched across the dance floor, heads held high.

Silence followed their departure – 1930s Blackpool was just not ready for the sight of two women dancing together in public, not yet.

Glimmer – dVerse Poetics

Here’s my submission to the dVerse Poetics prompt – this week, we are asked to write something inspired by one of the six beautiful artworks created by Catrin Welz-Stein showcased in the blog post.

I hope you enjoy my piece which has been inspired by the picture below – please do visit the linky link thing to read many more!

– Glimmer –

I long to fly away from here
escape the tendrils of my fear
that binds its barbs around my heart
and dogs my footsteps in the dark –

The dark that wraps itself around
and anchors my feet to the ground
leaden shoes and iron soul
a face that’s frozen, solid, cold –

A cold that cuts my life in two
that separates the me from you
there is no way to reach you now
I’ll never hear your voice aloud –

Your voice is just an echo, soft
whispers, laughs, holds me aloft
and draws my spirits high above
up to the clouds, with all your love –

Love, fly me away from here
banish dread, despair and fear
gently cradle my bruised heart
and light my way out from the dark.
