Denied – dVerse Poetics (Halloween version)

This week’s dVerse Poetics has us writing ghostly tales, but with a comedic twist. Such fun! It is very windy here on the coast tonight, and according to the weather forecast, worse is to come tomorrow evening – so my offering has picked up on that, as you will see!

I hope you enjoy it – and please visit dVerse to read all of the other creations!

– Denied –

The winds they howl and moan tonight
They say they’ll bring the folks a fright
Tear down trees and windows break
The gales will keep us all awake

‘Tis Halloween, the ghosts and ghouls
Should roam the earth and steal our souls
But the weather has them beat
And whipped them all from off their feet

They’re wrapped around the chimney stacks
Caught in trees, trapped in shacks
The wind has sucked away their cries
And turned them dumb, to their surprise

They clench their fists and gnash their teeth
Their tortured souls find no release
The one night of the year for fun
Has left our ghastly ghostlies glum

Frustrated in their scary games
They feel let down, a sense of shame
That dawn is almost on their heels
And not a scream has been revealed

From the throats of human prey
The winds have stolen fear away
The storm dies down, the daylight looms
The scary fiends are bathed in gloom

‘Twas Halloween, a terrible night
For ghosts that die to cause a fright
Mother Nature upped her game
The ghouls were silenced – what a shame!

Destination – dVerse Form for All – the Rondeau

Here’s my latest entry into the dVerse Form for All – why not take a look at everyone else’s wonderful responses?

This piece was inspired by my journey home from work this evening – after a particularly long and tiring day at work. I literally squeezed every ounce out of what was left of my mental energy today to produce this rondeau – the first that I have ever knowingly written!  I hope you enjoy it.

– Destination –

As the train rolls along the tracks
Its rhythm soothes, bids us relax
Our aching souls, our weary minds
That chew on cares enough to bind
Our beating hearts, encased in wax.

With no real love, spirits contract
Hands of friendship are pulled back
Metal-clad world, we are confined
As the train rolls

Sinking bodies, fall, collapse
On threadbare seats, like formless sacks
Smiling in sleep, we bring to mind
Our joys and hopes, bright pleasures find
The tunnel’s end brings light, perhaps
As the train rolls

Cat Heaven – dVerse Open Link Week 119

Here’s my latest entry into the dVerse Open Link – why not take a look at everyone else’s wonderful responses?

This is dedicated to some friends of mine, a lovely couple, who have had a horrible time this year. To top it all, one of their beautiful cats passed away yesterday. They know who they are – this is for them, and their puss.

– Cat Heaven –

In cat heaven, there’s always sunshine
And plenty of places to rest
In cat heaven, no-one disturbs you
In cat heaven, cats always know best

In cat heaven, there’s cream and fresh tuna
And your bowl is full to the brim
In cat heaven, your coat’s always glossy
In cat heaven, you always look trim

In cat heaven, there’s room for cats small and large
Moggies and pedigrees too
In cat heaven, old enemies make friends once more
In cat heaven, no-one is blue

So if you are wondering where I have gone
And you miss stroking my fur
Just think of cat heaven, look way up above
From cat heaven, you’ll hear my purr.
