Lurk – Magpie Tales

They think that I only have myself to blame, those who look upon me from afar. They, who are safe in the knowledge that their lives are sorted. They gaze upon me. They see only what they want to see.

Once, in the glory days. I was like them. From high on my pedestal, I judged, I commented, I highlighted the shortcomings of others. I was sure I knew it all.

Oh, how times change. Here I am, eking out my existence on the periphery. This underpass is my home, for tonight at least. Tomorrow, I move on, as always. Tomorrow, I sit with my hand out, waiting for coins to be tossed in my direction, as always.

I move on, but I don’t move far. I circle the town, spending my days in the streets where my former friends still shop and eat and drink. They see me. I am the only person static in a frenetic, non-stop world. They see me. They resent me. I am the reminder that life can turn on you in an instant.

I am the conscience they would rather not have.

Rigid – Five Sentence Fiction

pkpokimim

He comes and goes as he pleases – he tells me that he always has, and he intends for this to continue.

My jaw flexes and my heart burns with the impact of these words.

Words, mere words and yet they inhabit my mind, my every waking moment, my tossing and turning in the cold, lonely nights.

He knows that I know where his travels take him, and still, he continues.

He has his bread buttered both sides.

Possessed – 3 Word Wednesday

IMG_1049

He can devastate me with only a look. No words are necessary.

We are intertwined, like the gossamer threads of a spider’s web. So resilient in one circumstance, so friable and delicate in another.

I do not yet have the measure of him. I am almost certain that it will be a lifetime’s work. I may not complete it in the years left to me on this earth.

My mood will plummet like the setting sun, as surely as his mood takes me down with him. He is a dark man, a man of the night’s soul, a man of the calm before the storm.

I can no more extricate myself from him, than the fly caught in the spider’s web. The more I struggle, the more fast am I caught.

It will surely hurt less if I accept my plight.
