I can hear my Mum’s voice, clear and bell-like as if she is standing right next to me.
“A watched kettle never boils, Ellie!”
I shrug off the words, shoulders tight and tense, staring intently at the clock on the wall opposite – the second hand barely seems to be moving.
Time is elastic.
My patience, however, is not.

“Phooey, Regina – he will not notice our absence, not one bit of it! I hear Lady de Havilland will be putting in an appearance… you know he is like a dog on heat when she is in town!”
“Oh, Millicent, what are you saying?”
“You know exactly what I am saying dear sister – you don’t need a map to work out where Father will be staying the night…”
