“Hey, Gene, look at this! They must have taken over the outside space as well!”

“I love the juxtaposition of its comment on the destruction of society… ooh, it’s so clever, I could eat it right up!”

“I know… especially when you think about the decadence inside, not to mention the gallery itself, established by patriarchy, funded by private industry. It really is something.”

“Look, I’m going to take a few photos. This will fit into my PhD thesis. My professor will be stunned.”

“Mind your backs, guys! Watch out for the dustcart!”

“Hey! Stop! This is a great work of art!”

“Err, no, it’s not. The dress shop next door is having a re-fit.”

“Mother?”
“Yes, honey?”
“What are these things under the ramp?”
“Hold on a moment, sugar, let me just finish this. Here, you have one as well, they’re to die for.”
“Mmm, oh yes!”
“What did you want to know? Sorry, I got side-tracked. Here, have the last one.”
“I wanted to know about the jagged things under the ramp.”
“Oh, yes. I think they’re steps. Back in the Lean Times, people walked. Instead of zooming up the ramp in one of these babies, they had to use the steps, wasting all their energy. Strange, huh?”
“How primitive! Mother?”
“Yes, sweetie?”
“Can we buy another box of Snickers bars? I could do with a snack before lunch.”

If Toby could speak, he would have a thing or two to say. The constant flow of immigrants and emigrants stepping over the threshold night and day had taught him a thing or two.

Pete had the cushy job, checking the credentials of those who wanted in, striking through the names of those who wanted out (although that was a relatively new phenomenon, to be fair).

It was always ‘St Peter this’ and ‘St Peter that’.

Nobody ever mentioned Toby, perched above the pearly gates.

Poor Toby, without even so much as a finger available to scratch that itch just above his right eye…
