Fool’s Gold

I wonder if in a future to come
We’ll ponder on the verb ‘to frack’
If our horizons will make us all glum
At the backbone that we lack

For want of a nail, the shoe falls off
For want of a mind, we act as one
We crumble, shake, allow others to scoff
And squander our Earth in pursuit of fun

My heart is hopeful, half-full is my glass
As protestors take a brave, strong stand
But I’m afraid we’ll fall on our collective ass
Swap morals for oil and sell off all our land!

This week on dVerse, our Swedish bar-tender Bjorn wants us to write dagsvers, or daily verse, a journalistic form of poetry that (sadly) only seems to appear in Nordic newspapers. These poetic comments on current events, maybe with a touch of fun, are a wonderful idea! I’m afraid I’m not up to adding a cartoon style drawing to set off my sardonic little poem, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. And yes, I confess it is on the dark side of funny, but hey, you should know how I roll by now!

Please do go and visit the other wonderful poets who take part in the dVerse community and do, do, do comment! We all love a comment!

– Mayday! Mayday! –

“Mu-um! Mu-um!”

“Just a minute, Lucy. Don’t jog my arm, I’m trying to take a photo!”

Perhaps I’d made a stupid mistake. Lucy was struggling with the heat, the mosquitoes, the oxygen-starved air. Holidaying where the dart landed on the map had seemed a great idea, but –

“It’s like a Maypole without the pole! Look! And here are the dancers! Aren’t they huge?”

We hadn’t seen a soul since we arrived in the remote village. Now I realised we hadn’t been looking up high enough. Tree trunks were legs, humans didn’t live here. We were in the land of friendly giants.

Let the fun begin, and our cares slip away.

The mountains of paperwork had reached mammoth proportions.

Deluged by policies, amendments, white papers and term sheets, her desk had disappeared long ago.

There was a knock at her office door.

“Oh come in, do. Please tell me you’re my new assistant…”

The air hung heavy with expectation, desperation even.

The timid girl entered, hovering near the door.

“S-sorry,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She darted forward, placed a Perspex sign on top of one of the paper towers and left – quickly.

Clare picked up the sign and rolled her eyes.

“‘Head of Environmental Policy’ indeed,” she muttered.

Oh, the irony.
