SoCS Jan 4/20 – Tap tap tap

‘Ow!’

That’s what my brain is thinking as I stare at the computer screen yet again, and begin tapping away at my laptop – yet again. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed my break from work over the festive season, relaxed, eaten tasty food, cooked tasty food, had lie-ins, all the usual ‘stuff’ as we’ve hunkered down against the short hours of daylight at this time of year. BUT (and it’s a big but, hence the shouty capitals!), I’ve also been working very hard.

Thankfully, it’s been pleasurable work. The only person standing over me and wagging a judgemental finger has been my inner taskmaster (and believe me, she is quite the taskmaster!).

Also thankfully, I have finished said work – at 6.37am on 28th December to be exact. I was so excited, I posted about it on my Instagram account – @freyathewriter

By the way, the writing community over there is absolutely lovely. I only joined to see if there was such a thing as a writing community – and there is! It’s been a happy accident to find friendly and encouraging fellow writers.

Anyway, the work that I’ve been, errr, working on (use your vocab, Freya!) has been the first draft of my dystopian novel. Quite wisely I think, I’ve taken a few days since completing it to have a break so that when I start my editing, I’ll see it with fresh eyes. At this stage, I’m looking forward to it – although I recognise that I might think differently at some point in the future!

SoCS Dec 21/19 – Dorian Gray’s Cupboard

This time of year is full of pressure to mingle, to socialise, to network (if you’re in business), to buy, buy and spend, spend.

I’m not anti-social (yes, yes you are, Freya). I like (some) people. I love my partner. I love my family. I also love hunkering down, curling up under a blanket with a steaming cup of coffee or tea, a book, or a good film or my laptop so I can peck away at the keyboard on my work in progress novel. I like to put distance between me and The Outside.

Partly it’s how I’ve been for as long as I can remember. I was an only child until I was almost 13 – I was pretty self-reliant (and writing stories) even then. In fact, I’m almost certain my mum still has some of these stories filed away in the Sideboard of Doom. You know how Dorian Gray had his aging picture in the attic? I’m pretty sure that my mum’s excellent memory for All The Things Her Children Did When They Were Little is because she has filed pieces of our lives in that darned cupboard!

Bus – #SoCS Sept. 24/16

img_2389

On a Sunday morning, I’m probably the youngest person on the bus – and believe you me, I’m no teenager! Nor am I in my twenties or thirties… sigh!

But that got me thinking. Just because I am physically the youngest, does that mean I am also the youngest mentally? If I have my health and all my mental faculties about me when I’m a pensioner (or senior, as people of a certain age are known in other countries), I want to see the funny, light side of life. I want to find joy in the most mundane of things, have a cheeky sense of humour and not feel constricted by deadlines, by the Monday to Friday routine, by all those matters that can weigh us down when we’re of (standard) working age.

I have wondered, every now and again, what is going on in the minds of my older fellow travellers. I hope they are enjoying life in the way I aspire to, when I reach their age. They’ve contributed to society, paid their way, put the hours in. I think they deserve to kick back and wear a cheeky grin, don’t you?

It’s Saturday (hurrah!) so that means it’s time for the lovely Linda’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday, and this week she invites us to write using the word ‘bus’, or a word that includes it.

Please do hope on over to her blog to enjoy what others have written!
