The times they are a-changin’ – dVerse Haibun Monday

dsc_0121

Stupid as it sounds, I never imagined my life without Dad. He and I didn’t have the easiest of relationships. As a little girl, I desperately wanted his presence, wanted him to notice me, wanted him there, with me. So, stupid as it sounds, his absence then felt like a presence, even though his actual presence was erratic and intermittent. We didn’t see each other, didn’t contact each other for many years. Oh, I kept track of him for most of that time, via the wonders of the internet. And then, the London bombings happened near to where he worked, and that was my wake-up call. Life is too short. Oh, how prescient was that thought, for what was too short a time after that, he died. I never imagined what that would feel like, how angry, desolate, lost, hurt, devastated I would feel. I have healed, as we all do, but he is there, in my mind, every day. He is once again absent, this time permanently gone, but always with me.

Leaves turn, green to gold

seasons change, nature gives birth –

death to life once more.

It’s Haibun Monday over on dVerse and we are asked to write our haibun on the subject of change, including a nature-based haiku to wrap up our piece.

I write not infrequently about my dad – he’s in my thoughts every day. It’s a strange thing, I never imagining him being gone, given that he was absent for so much of my life. Oddly, my mum and step-dad, my supporters, my cheerleaders, my safe harbours who have seen me through good times and bad – well, I do think of what it will be like when they are no longer here (gosh, that sounds morbid, it’s not meant to!). My mum did say to me, not long after my dad died, that her own mum was in her thoughts every day, even though she died when my mum was a little girl. I truly understand that. It’s not a conscious thought, it just is.

Anyway, I’m sure that everyone else who takes part tonight will approach this theme in their own unique way. Please do head on over to dVerse to enjoy the creativity!

The never life – Poetic Bloomings

DSC_0006

seasons pass so hither and thither

as we walk about with our heads laid down

searching screens for ideas anew

all-while forgetting the me and the you

all-while forgetting the me and the you

we are in front of each other

with our vacant plate faces

searching for something in far away places

searching for something in far away places

that bag, that car, that three bed, four bath

as if our existences only have meaning

beyond our own souls, so parched and keening

beyond our own souls, so parched and keening

is nothing worth having, we ignore the truth

the truth of the empty have-it-all journey

hurtling prone on a rubber-wheeled gurney

it’s no life, I tell you

it’s death in suspension

all while we’re forgetting

the me and the you

Today, over at Poetic Bloomings we are invited to choose a quote, and let our poetry bloom from there.

I have become (recently) a huge admirer of E.E. Cummings’ poetry, and so I couldn’t resist jazzing on his poem, ‘Anyone lived in a pretty how town’, which as I understand it, is about the loss of identity in the modern world. Funny how this is so prescient – he would have a field-day with that theme now, I think.

My specific inspiration for my poem was the final verse:

“Women and men(both dong and ding)

summer autumn winter spring

reaped their sowing and went their came

sun moon stars rain”

I hope you enjoy my offering – please do head on over to Poetic Bloomings to read more – and do take part if you can!

Even the stars – dVerse Poetics

DSC_0093

even the stars

delight in sweet repose

earned from shining all but invisibly

behind clouds hanging heavy

during  long winter’s nights

they mirror our joy

as we dig our toes

deep into sand

 – baked –

under the gaze of sweet summer sun

we sigh as the stars fade in early morn

the pale sky deepening to azure blue

as the sun reaches her zenith

we sigh

the stars rest

as we do

Summer has officially begun, and over on dVerse Poetics, Walt (our friendly host this evening) invites us to wax lyrical, inspired by the (hopefully) halcyon days of the warmest weeks and months ahead.

Here in the UK, this season is a mixed blessing, mostly a hoped for thing of long, hot, rain-free days, rather than an actuality! Still, the dark nights are shorter, the light is with us for longer, even if not rain free!

Walt has asked us to take our inspiration from one of the poems and poets he has included in his prompt, or perhaps use one from another dVerse contributor, or another poem/poet entirely. I have taken the line ‘even the stars’ from Kobayashi Issa’s ‘Summer Night’, which Walt shared with us in his prompt.

As always, I invite you to read the offerings from the other members of the dVerse community – and to take part if you feel so inspired! It’s fun, relaxing, and you’ll definitely get a warm welcome!
