Only A River

Dogs howl, as is their wont.

The cold moon rises, her blank face pierced by branches turned naked and brittle. All trees are leafless at this time of year, bark rimed with frost.

My breath hangs, shimmering in the freezing air, and the iridescent image swims through a mirror that flows like liquid silk. I frown at such misplaced fancy. It is only a river reflecting evidence of my vitality.

A river… A chance.

The bloodhounds remain far distant yet. I brace myself against the cold and step into the freezing depths, gritting my teeth.

I wade agains the current, skin, muscles, bones aching in protest, my greatcoat sagging, dragging heavy with water.

Until the wretched creatures lose my scent, here I must remain. I plead, to any great benefactor who might hear my prayers, for clouds, mist, a dense fog.

For my freedom.

Over at dVerse Poets Pub, it’s time for a bit of Prosery, courtesy of Dora. She has asked us to create a piece of prose, fiction or non-fiction, to include the following line from Stanley Kunitz’s most famous poem, King of the River:

. . . and the iridescent image swims
through a mirror that flows.”

I haven’t written a Prosery for some time, so this is a fun diversion from my usual poetic adventures. it must consist of maximum 144 words, and while the line can include different punctuation, it cannot be otherwise changed. I truly enjoyed incorporating this line into my fiction piece, and I hope it fits well into my narrator’s thoughts.

Getting Literal – A Gorgeous Review of ‘Jessica’

Thank you so much to Michelle of Getting Literal who has been kind enough to write a fantastic review of ‘Jessica’ this week.

If you want to read Michelle’s thoughts on our horror-filled collaborative work, please pop over and Get to know Jessica – if you dare.

JESSICA

Jessica can be purchased – it’s the kind of girl she is…

Hello, dear readers! As promised yesterday, here is the big reveal!

If you have been itching to purchase your own, honest to goodness copy of Jessica whether in e-book or real, live gorgeous paperback, here is how you can delve into the dark side…

*************

In October 2014 seven writers came together to create a meta-fiction project entitled JESSICA.

What was it all about? Here’s what Helena had to say:

“There are rumours that I keep a writer trapped in my basement… but I assure you… Jessica is and always was here of her own free will. Until one day she disappeared, and I began to realize that everything I thought I knew about her was wrong. Everyone has a terrifying story about Jessica B. Bell. Some of them are even true.”

It first appeared on Being the Memoirs of Helena Hann-Basquiat, beginning HERE.

If you read JESSICA, you may have noticed that there were pages torn from the journal. The complete JESSICA (with over 50 pages of new material – THE MISSING PAGES) can now be found on Amazon in PAPERBACK, or as a Kindle e-book.

There’s also a special, Deluxe Edition exclusive to iTunes (you will need an iPad or iMac/iBook to read – sorry, it won’t work on your iPhone).
