Desiccant

IMG_5558.jpg

And then all that has sustained will decay

And then the ignorant may no longer be blind

And then dry deserts will devour all that was fecund and free

And then the great and the poor will be desperate

And then the poor and the great will be parched

And then hoards of money will no longer cause a great divide

And then all Earth will be wasteland or dead sea

And then the greed of some will be vanquished by the needs of many

And then all will share equally in Nature’s harsh vengeance

And then all will drown like the sick and the weak and the old

And then parents will gaze on their young

And then the young will die in their arms

And then Earth will be free of our species once again.

This poem is inspired by Judy Chicago’s ‘Merger Poem’an altogether joyous, inspirational piece that, in my hopeful and happy moments, I really enjoy and admire.

Bizarrely, ‘Desiccant’ came to me out of seemingly thin air as I was lying in bed early this morning. Except of course it hasn’t come out of nowhere given the state of the world both politically and environmentally. I’m a great supporter of Extinction Rebellion’s work, so I dedicate this poem to them, and to Greta Thunberg, who has started a revolution where others have failed.

Blackout – Magpie Tales

Mother Earth’s daughter slept the sleep of the innocent, the blessed, the naive.

While she slept, war waged.

Her mother fought battle upon battle. fire with fire, flood with flood, she hurled everything in her arsenal at those who underestimated her.

And yet, forlornly, they had one thing at their disposal that Mother Earth did not, and in the end, it was this that brought darkness to the world and ensured that her daughter’s sleep would never, ever end.

Ignorance – it was this that killed us all.

Possessed – 3 Word Wednesday

IMG_1049

He can devastate me with only a look. No words are necessary.

We are intertwined, like the gossamer threads of a spider’s web. So resilient in one circumstance, so friable and delicate in another.

I do not yet have the measure of him. I am almost certain that it will be a lifetime’s work. I may not complete it in the years left to me on this earth.

My mood will plummet like the setting sun, as surely as his mood takes me down with him. He is a dark man, a man of the night’s soul, a man of the calm before the storm.

I can no more extricate myself from him, than the fly caught in the spider’s web. The more I struggle, the more fast am I caught.

It will surely hurt less if I accept my plight.

This is my latest entry to 3 Word Wednesday, I hope you enjoy it’s darkness and menace. Please do take a look at the other offerings!

This week, the words are:

Devastate

Gossamer

Plummet
